indivibes: Advice for New Artists – My Journey, My Lessons
Hello All!
Today’s blog is for all the aspiring artists out there. I’ve been getting some questions about how to break into the industry, stay motivated, and keep the creativity flowing, so I thought I’d share a bit of my journey and some advice that’s helped me along the way.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I’m all about blending soulful melodies with real, raw stories. But I didn’t start here – it took time, effort, and a whole lot of faith in my vision. When I first dropped my mixtape Bloom, I wasn’t sure how people would react. It was personal, introspective, and my voice was still evolving. But I knew one thing for sure: I had something to say, and I was going to keep pushing no matter what.
So if you’re on your own journey as a new artist, here are a few things I’ve learned:
1. Stay True to Your Voice
I can’t stress this enough. There will always be people telling you how to sound, what to create, and where you should go. But at the end of the day, your voice is yours. When I was working on Bloom, I was tempted to follow trends or sound like other artists I admired. But I realized that the magic happens when you tap into what you want to say and how you want to say it. Don’t be afraid to sound different or stand out. Authenticity will always shine through.
2. Consistency is Key
Getting my music out there hasn’t been easy. There were times I doubted myself, times where it felt like the hustle wasn’t paying off. But one thing I learned early on is that consistency will always open doors. Whether it’s posting new covers on TikTok (like my latest that hit 2,279 views – thank you again, Vibers! ) or releasing tracks that speak to your heart, staying consistent is what builds momentum. Keep showing up, and your audience will grow.
3. Embrace the Grind
Being an independent artist is not all glitz and glam. There are late nights in the studio, emails that don’t get answered, and moments where you feel stuck. Trust me, I’ve been there. But embracing the grind is part of the journey. Every struggle teaches you something, whether it’s perfecting your craft, learning the business side of things, or growing mentally and emotionally. The grind builds character and resilience, and that’s what will sustain you when times get tough.
4. Build Your Community
For me, one of the most fulfilling parts of this journey has been building my IndiVibes community. When I see 228 views on my website, it’s not just a number – it’s people who believe in my art. And that’s something I’m forever grateful for. So my advice to new artists? Focus on building your community. Engage with your fans, share your process, and let them see the real you. Social media is a great tool, but genuine connections will take you further than any algorithm.
5. Keep Learning and Growing
I started off inspired by Neo-Soul legends like Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu, but I didn’t stop there. I kept listening, studying, and evolving. Whether you’re learning from other artists, taking vocal lessons, or improving your production skills, there’s always room to grow. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Your sound will evolve, and that’s a beautiful thing.
6. Celebrate the Small Wins
Every milestone matters. Whether it’s 100 streams, 1,000 views, or your first gig, celebrate it. When Bloom got noticed on Bandcamp, it was a huge moment for me because it validated the hard work I had put into that project. Even now, seeing the views on my covers or new listeners checking out my website brings me joy. No win is too small to celebrate – they all add up to your bigger journey.
So to all my fellow new artists out there, keep pushing, keep creating, and most importantly, keep believing in yourself. The road may be long, but trust me, it’s worth it. You’ve got something special to share, and the world needs to hear it.
And for all my Vibers who’ve been on this journey with me, thank you for the love and support that allows me to live my dream. Here’s to all of us – artists and fans – creating something beautiful together.
Stay inspired,
Indigo Asaá 💜
