indivibes: 7 Facts About Me, Indigo Asaá

Did you know that “Asaa” in the Igbo language means “seven”? It’s a number that is personally connected to who I am. For example, being born in July. As a child, I started playing basketball at 7 years old with my first jersey number of #14 (two groups of 7!).

So, in honor of that, I thought I’d share seven interesting facts about myself. These moments, passions, and quirks make me who I am, both on and off the stage. Here’s a little window into my world.

1. Bandcamp’s “Best Soul Project” of 2019

One of my proudest moments was when my music got featured on Bandcamp’s “Best Soul Project” list in 2019. That was the first time my work reached so many new listeners, and honestly, it was surreal. Having my music connect with people on that level meant the world to me and reminded me why I’m here doing what I love.

2. Performing at City Winery in 2022

In 2022, I had the honor of performing at City Winery—a space with such a unique, intimate vibe. It was the kind of night that makes you feel the music right alongside everyone in the room. That performance felt like sharing a big part of my soul with everyone who came out, and I carry that energy with me in every show. I also found myself signing my name backstage on a mural next to various singers and acts, including a fellow Cherokee High School classmate singer-songwriter, Tone Stith.

3. The Cancer Vibes Are Real

I’m a Cancer, and I’ll admit—I feel things deeply. If you’ve ever sensed that my music hits a bit on the emotional side, this is probably why! I can’t help but pour my heart out in my songs. I think it’s this love for emotional connection that lets me share raw stories with my audience.

4. Bridging Music and Speech Therapy

When I’m not on stage, I’m studying to become a speech therapist. This path has been incredibly fulfilling and has changed the way I look at voice and expression. It’s amazing how the science of speech blends with the art of music, and I feel lucky to bring these two worlds together in my life and my music.

5. Proud of My Igbo Heritage

Being rooted in my Igbo heritage is a massive part of who I am. Growing up with those cultural influences shaped my perspective on rhythm, storytelling, and identity. When I create music, I try to honor these roots, infusing my sound with pieces of my heritage so others can experience that connection too.

6. Anime Lover, Through and Through

Okay, here’s something a lot of people might not know—I’m a huge anime fan! Naruto and Naruto Shippuden are my all-time favorites. There’s something about Naruto’s journey, his resilience, and his loyalty to his friends that really resonates with me. It’s a reminder to stay true to yourself and keep pushing, which is something I take with me in my own journey. Ironically enough, he was placed on Team 7 and became the Seventh Hokage (another nod to the number 7).

7. Storytelling Is at the Heart of My Music

For me, music isn’t just about catchy hooks or beats—it’s about storytelling. I want each song to take listeners on a journey, making them feel like they’re living in that moment with me. I’m here to share my stories and, hopefully, help others feel seen in theirs.

Thanks for joining me on this little dive into who I am. It feels meaningful to share these sevenpieces of myself, each one shaping my music and my life. Here’s to many more chapters and new discoveries ahead.
