Indivibes: Celebrating “The One” – 3 Years of Self-Empowerment & Growth
Hey IndiVibers! 💜
Can you believe it? The One is about to turn three years old on October 3, 2020, and I’m still feeling all the emotions I had when I first released it. This song was a turning point for me – not just musically, but personally. Today, I want to take a moment to celebrate The One, break down the songwriting process, and reflect on the journey this track has taken me on.

The Story Behind “The One”
When I wrote The One, I was dealing with the complexities of a failing friendship that was draining me emotionally. It wasn’t just about heartache, though. It was about realizing my worth and deciding that I wasn’t going to settle for less than I deserved. I needed to reclaim my power and remind myself (and anyone who’s ever been in a similar situation) that we are more than what others put on us.
The song isn’t just about telling someone "I'm not the one for your games." It’s about stepping back and recognizing when someone is trying to pull you down with them. It’s about standing tall and saying, "I’m more than this. I’m not here to be your emotional punching bag." The unfortune process I had writing this song is that people underestimate friendship breakups more than romantic ones.
A Breakdown of the Lyrics
Let’s talk about some of the key lyrics in The One:
“You calling me emotional, a full of mess / You acting like I’m giving you full of stress”
This opening line sets the tone for the song. I was tired of being labeled as "too emotional" or "difficult" when, in reality, I was just being real about my feelings. It was exhausting to be in a space where my emotions were being invalidated. I wanted to express how frustrating it is to be misunderstood and misrepresented in the friendship.
“Venting on social media but can’t be social with me”
This line came from a personal pet peeve of mine – how some people can be so vocal about their frustrations online but avoid real conversations in person. It’s a call-out to those who choose to hide behind screens instead of confronting issues head-on. For me, it was important to highlight this because genuine communication is what relationships are built on.
“Closed stubborn mouths don’t get you fed”
One of my favorite lines. This is a reminder that if you’re not willing to open up and communicate, you’re not going to get what you want. Whether in love, life, or work, you can’t expect things to change if you’re not willing to speak your truth.
“I am not the one, the two, three, the four, the five / Six, seven, eight, nine or ten”
This chorus is my anthem of self-worth. It’s me saying, "I’m not here for your games or for being treated as less than what I am." It’s a powerful mantra of knowing your value and refusing to be part of someone’s list of excuses or temporary fixes.
“You want me to chase it all like it’s tag / Baby I ain’t ya man, I ain’t a friend”
This verse reflects the exhaustion of constantly feeling like you have to chase after something that should come naturally – love, respect, loyalty. I wanted to send a message that I wasn’t going to play along in a game of tag, constantly running after what I deserve. The patience had run out, and it was time to let go.
“I know that you facing demons, I sympathize / But can’t support you dismantling me with white lies”
This part acknowledges that I understood what the other person was going through, but there’s a line between offering support and being used as a crutch. It’s one thing to empathize, but it’s another to allow someone to tear you down while they work through their issues. This lyric was a way of saying, "I can care about you without sacrificing my own well-being."
Why “The One” Still Resonates
Three years later, The One continues to resonate because it’s a song about self-respect and boundaries – something we all need to be reminded of sometimes. I’ve had so many of you reach out and tell me how the song helped you through your own struggles with relationships and self-worth, and that means everything to me.
It’s a track that allows us to reflect on how far we’ve come, how much we’ve grown, and how important it is to stand firm in our values. Every time I perform this song or hear it played back, it brings me back to that moment of clarity I had while writing it. It’s not just about a specific friendship or relationship anymore – it’s about knowing when to walk away from anything that doesn’t serve you, whether it’s a person, a job, or even an old mindset.
